Now I see fire, inside the loungeroom...

The last few weeks of the build are by far the most fun. All of the long awaited upgrade items chosen many months ago are finally making their way into the house.

Today our Rinnai fireplace was installed *cue happy dance* and it looks AMAZING! It is a wonderful centerpiece at the heart of our open plan living, dining and kitchen area.

The fireplace doesn't sit flush with the wall as there are heat vents at the sides. This particular model is designed for heating large areas, not just for visual appeal. We will have a slimline recessed mirror TV above, tucked away from any heat (when we finish paying for the 'essentials' like carpet and concrete).

Very pleased!

  1. Hi, your house looks amazing, congrats! We would love a fireplace the same as yours but with the fake logs instead of the rocks. Did you get the fireplace through McJones? It's a bit late for us as we moved in last September but this cold weather has made us realise we need one asap as we went for the higher ceilings and because we have the split it takes it up to 3 metres in the kitchen/dining/living area which is hard to heat. Any info on the fireplace would greatly appreciated.

  2. Hey there anonymous,
Our fireplace is a Rinnai 752 LPG gas fire which was supplied through McDonald Jones for around $6-7k.
According to the specifications from Rinnai it should heat up to 94sqm in cool environments (Australian East Coast). It's hard to say how accurate that is without having used it yet, but I'll know for sure in a few weeks.

The main reason we had MDJ do our fireplace is due to it requiring a 450mm pop out to host the unit and flue which runs straight to the outside wall. This involved framework and gyprocking that the local suppliers couldn't do for us. There are units that are free standing or don't require the pop out available from Rinnai and also another company called real flame. On the Rinnai website there is a survey you can do to determine what fireplace is suitable for your house - maybe give that a go?

Thanks for your lovely comments, we are really excited about our new house :)

    1. Thanks for your speedy reply Mel. I have a mate who is a chippy who could knock up the frame to house the fireplace and we had McJones install a gas point and put up the heat resistant gyprock on that wall knowing we would install the fireplace one day. I am hoping we can have the flue go straight up and out the roof as the rear side is our hall entry. I checked when the frame went up and I think there is room for the flue to go between roof trusses and other bits of framing etc. It is freezing where we live in the winter, huge frosts -6 degrees, snow sometimes and the wind just bites most of the winter which is why we really need the gas fire. The other thing is that we don't have natural gas here, all bottled gas. I love that we went for the higher ceilings and the dining/living area is beautiful but it's going to take some heating!! We beefed up our ducted aircon to a 19.3 kw as well, it's been great so far but it is only May! Thanks again for your time. Michael
